Just off the southern shore of Long Island,
New York
lies a long, narrow barrier island known primarily for the city to
which it is home—Long Beach. Aptly named, the modest city blankets most
of the island and enjoys a 3.5-mi (5.6-km) stretch of golden sand
running along its length. In fact, water is never far away from any
point in Long Beach. The city is sandwiched between the Atlantic Ocean
and the Reynolds Channel—a land area that measures a mere half mile at
its widest point.
These days, Long Beach is primarily a quiet bedroom community of New York City
but for much of its past the city was enjoyed as a summer resort area
thanks to its two waterfronts and close proximity to NYC. The city was
founded in 1880 when the first hotel was built, and one of its most
popular features today is a testament to its early days as a vacation
spot, namely the city’s boardwalk.
Built in the early 1900s with the help of elephants from nearby Coney
Island, the boardwalk runs for 2.5 mi (4 km) along the ocean
and is favored by joggers, cyclists and strollers.
